Before washing any fabric, It is essential to treat the fabric according to the type of the fabric, see the wash care label first to avoid any errors right from the beginning, fabrics such as silk or wool can be easily ruined if treated more harshly.
Treat your favourite dress with caution. It is vital that you treat the stain in the garment as quickly as possible by soaking its water with a mild soap or washing detergent. In case you have been able to remove the stain by this method, we advise you to wash the entire garment thoroughly and let it dry.
Stains can be removed in many ways at home, we have listed five very common stains.
- Red wine
- Coffee
- Ketchup & tomato sauce
- Sweat & deodorant
- Oil & grease
We have listed some textile-friendly, sustainable methods of household remedies to treat stains from your cotton dress.
RED WINE STAINS
Wine stains can be removed by lemon juice, salt and mineral water, do not let the stain dry out or put it in the wash without prior treatment.
- Sprinkle some lemon juice over the stain and add salt, let it absorb.
- Lastly, rinse the stain in some mineral water and put it for hand or machine wash.
These simple techniques will allow you to enjoy the comfort of the dress without worrying about the stains.
COFFEE STAINS
We highly recommend you to rinse the stain with plenty of water quickly, delays might cause further damage to the fabric,
Take the below steps:
- Put a little liquid washing detergent to the affected area and let it stay for at least five-seven minutes.
- If required, repeat the process a few more times.
- Lastly, we recommend washing the garment by hand or in the machine, at the temperature mentioned in the wash care label of the garment.
SWEAT & DEODORANT STAINS
These stains are produced due to aluminium salts present in the deodorant, which chemically reacts with the sweat.
Follow the below tips to avoid these kinds of stains; we recommend you to wait until the deodorant is absorbed and your skin is dry enough before wearing one of your handmade dresses.
We highly advise you to treat the stains as quickly as possible, the two most effective ways to remove are:
- Treat these kinds of stains by adding 10 grams of citric acid in an ltr of water, soak the garment overnight, Lightly rub the stain with baking soda or denture cleaner which can help the yellow deodorant stains.
- To treat dark coloured garments, we advise you to check the fastness of the colour priorly, once you have tested the clothing, gently rub the stain and soak the garment in water by adding a little vinegar essence or gall soap.
Later, the garment can be hand or machine washed according to the temperature advised in the wash care label of your garment.
TOMATO SAUCE & KETCHUP STAINS
We advise you to prewash the stain before putting it to wash.
- Carefully remove the ketchup residue from the fabric with a knife or spoon.
- Rinse the garment in cold water, avoid hot water, and it can lead the stain to penetrate in the fabric.
- Later, add mild washing detergent to the water; it might help the stain to release and will act as a solvent.
- Lastly, you can handwash the dress, or in the washing machine.
OIL & GREASE STAINS
In case of stains caused due to grease and oil stains, we recommend the below washing steps:
- Quickly sprinkle some talcum powder or cornflour, it will absorb the excess fat.
- Rub the stain with a brush
- Wash the garment soon in the cold water. Carbonic acid can help remove the stain very effectively and promptly.
Oil stains can be treated very well by soaking the garment in cool water and a little washing detergent, and later hand or machine washed for thorough cleaning.
