Story

In 2011, with a single sewing machine and a heart full of hope, I began World of Crow in my father’s godown. We started with what we had: surplus fabrics and an unwavering determination. I was the entire team—sales, logistics, and accounting. The early days were raw, a true test of grit. I'd pack clothes into huge plastic bags and take the train from Surat to Mumbai, going store to store, hoping for a sale.

Every cent counted. At trade shows in Paris, I’d personally lift 50-kilogram bags at the airport and stay in humble Airbnbs to save money. These were not just challenges; they were lessons that forged the very soul of our brand. They taught me the value of hard work and resourcefulness, and they made me grateful for every small victory. Today, working with incredible partners like Madewell and Nordstrom feels like a blessing, a testament to that journey of love and labor.

The real turning point for World of Crow came when I started working directly with the hands that spin and weave India's stories. I began to engage with local artisans, not just to buy their work, but to collaborate and co-create our own textiles. This shift from simply making garments to preserving and celebrating traditional crafts ignited a fire within me. Our purpose became clear: to bring the heritage of Indian handloom to the world and create opportunities for the artisans who keep these traditions alive. Today, we work with communities in West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Kashmir, and Nagaland, and I am in awe of their artistry every single day.

Every fabric we use is handwoven, created without electricity. It is a mindful and eco-sensitive process that uses 100% cotton and leaves a low carbon footprint. Some of our most intricate weaves are a labor of pure love, with a single yard taking an artisan up to six days to complete. For me, this is about more than clothes. It's about honoring the dedication, skill, and history woven into every thread.

When I visit the weaving clusters, my heart swells. I see generations working together—mothers spinning, sons weaving, entire families sharing their lives through their craft. In these moments, I feel a profound connection, a shared humanity. My greatest joy isn't in chasing a price point; it's in creating from the heart alongside these talented artisans. I feel blessed to translate their love and community spirit into wearable art.

Our commitment to responsible creation continues in our 1200-square-foot workshop in Gujarat. When these beautiful fabrics arrive, we transform them into contemporary clothing for contemporary women, using the most sustainable methods. Each piece is made to order, ensuring we avoid waste and use our resources wisely. You will never find me hidden away in a pristine office. My workspace is on the workshop floor, right in the middle of all the action—designing, producing, and even ordering food for the team. This openness is a core part of my philosophy.

I believe every place has its own grace, and our greatest strength is in creating something that complements nature while leaving the wearer at ease. It's about clothing that carries a genuine warmth and story. In a truly unique and heartfelt practice, our garments are blessed with a sprinkle of water infused with ancient prayers, recited for hours. This ritual, born from my spiritual journey, carries intentions of well-being, inner peace, and profound love. It's a sacred blessing woven into every piece, meant to bring balance and harmony to those who wear them.

Love, Shaila
